Friends, with that pretty brilliant commercial from a few days ago for Walmart featuring some icons of science fiction and now Mountain Dew Zero’s reenactment from 1980’s The Shining – there has been an amazing amount of pop culture love being presented in advertisements recently. While the former had a few notable icons from Flash Gordon as well as Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure – this Mountain Dew Zero commercial features Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) in the role of Jack Torrance with Black-ish‘s Tracee Ellis Ross portraying Wendy Torrance. Even the memorable wave of blood pouring forth from the elevators in Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 novel of the same name has been given the Mountain Dew makeover. And while this Mountain Dew Zero ad is indeed hilarious – I think it’s safe to say that Bryan Cranston doing double duty as the Grady Twins… well… that might be scarier than the film it’s spoofing, right?

It really is impressive how closely they matched the action and camera work on 1980’s The Shining with this Mountain Dew Zero commercial. Although perhaps for myself the more amazing thing is I actually want to try out the sugar-free soda – I will admit that when I was much younger I quite enjoyed Mountain Dew… when we get older we sometimes are forced to change our diets and is exactly the case with myself.

With Super Bowl LIV capturing most of the countries attention this evening I am sure there are still quite a few surprises in store for us fans of pop culture in regards to movie trailers and such. Personally though I feel like we may have already seen two of the best ads this year – although I will leave it up to you to decide which was better – the Walmart version or Mountain Dew Zero?
